Honey Bee Bakery

Honey Bee Bakery is a small bakery and restaurant located in the Belk/Home Depot shopping center. They open at 8am. They serve brunch on the weekend and the meals are under $10. They have a breakfast plate similar to Big Bad Breakfast that is delicious. They serve more healthy options like oatmeal with raisins and also offer many baked goods. The food tastes great and this is a recommended stop in Oxford.

During the week they have a lunch menu and a light breakfast menu.

Ole Miss Alumni Hotel Restaurant

The restaurant on the lower floor of the Ole Miss alumni hotel serves southern soul-food style plate lunches for lunch and offers a dinner menu as well. The restaurant closes at 9:30.

The food at dinner was good but the fried-green tomatoes were soggy and fell apart at the touch. Other than that the meal was good. The fried catfish was great and so were the side items (mac & cheese and turnip greens).

For a fine dining experience it might better to head to the square or the Ravine.

Snack Bar

Wow! A raw oyster bar in Oxford Mississippi. This place offers raw oyster from just about anywhere you can think of. The offer many different takes on common southern dishes like guiness battered catfish, marinated crab claws, oyster pan roast, tender lamb shepards pie, and duck confit. They also offer signature drinks such as: bourbon milk punch, the old fashioned Sazerac, and the Snackbar Pimm’s Cup. This is truly a unique place with a nationally renowned chef John Currence who is the recent winner of best chef south. This place has ample parking for the masses so come avoid the madness of the square and enjoy a unique taste of the south.

Chick-Fil-A in Oxford, MS

Chick-Fil-A is a fast food restaurant that opened in August 2009 on Jackson Avenue across the street from Wal-Mart. Open from 6:30am to 10pm they offer all kinds of chicken from chicken nuggets to chicken salad sandwiches. Since the drive-through line can get very long it may be faster to just go inside and order. They offer a variety of side items, a fruit bowl, cole slaw, french fries, and more.

Catfish One Oxford, MS

Catfish one has great catfish, chicken, and seafood platters along with other fried items. The prices are very reasonable, you can get a “light” or full size meal and the light meal is a decent size in itself. Better prices and better taste than Taylor Grocery catfish in my opinion.

Located across University Avenue from the Dodge dealership, past Kroger.

I am not sure of the hours but usually in the late afternoon/evening they are open. I’m sure the hours will be more consistent once the students are back in town for the fall.

Snack Bar

Went to Snack Bar last night, located next to Big Bad Breakfast up North Lamar.

The menu has a lot of different options from a steak sandwich to lobster mac and cheese. I had the rainbow trout and it was delicious, topped with some walnuts that really made it perfect.

The wood trim gives the inside of the restaurant a great look.

I recommend Snack Bar anytime

Taylor Grocery

I took a group of friends to Taylor Grocery this evening hoping for a relaxing evening. Yeah right. We sat down and ordered. The first problem was the food came before the salad came. The 2nd problem was that those of us who ordered the filet plate got 4 tiny pieces of catfish, the tiny hushpuppies were almost as big as the catfish. Those of us who got the “All You Can Eat” whole catfish dinner had even more of a surprise in store.

After they each ordered a couple more pieces of catfish, they waited, and waited. After about 30 minutes of waiting they just asked to put them in a to-go box since everyone else had been done eating for some time. About 10 minutes later the owner of the restaurant comes in. This is where a bad night at Taylor Grocery could have been fixed. Instead the owner berates my friends for asking for a to go box. He says “We aren’t here to feed your family and friends” and a few other things in an extremely rude way. He never offered to let them have the catfish they had ordered (and were PAYING FOR with their meal) if they ate it at the restaurant.

Beyond this, a $12 catfish plate comes with 4 tiny pieces of catfish the size of popcorn chicken. Tiny.

So in short, stay away from Taylor Grocery if you want a relaxing meal with your family and friends.

BTW, the guy at the table next to us took his catfish home and shook the hands of the owner on his way out.

The menu at McAlisters includes salads, appetizers, baked potatoes, sandwiches, and soups. Be sure to try the sweet tea!
